OOTD: yale skull and bones.

To be honest, I've never been a fan of black. I find that its such a depressing color and I feel that my mood instantly dives when I'm wearing something....black. I know of some people who practically live in black clothes and I always always always wonder, how come it doesn't affect their mood?!

But these past few months, I've come to like black. I wouldn't say love, let's just keep it at like hehe. I agree, it is a flattering color. It definitely makes you look like you lost a few pounds, hands down. I've been searching for a faux leather moto jacket for awhile now and I've never seen anything that I like. Its either too messy with lots of zips or too studded, until I saw this piece at Topshop.

I fell in love. 

Immediately, I could see flashes of me wearing it with a white eyelet dress, with a long chiffon maxi dress and lots of other outfit pairings. Yes, so much going on in my head, it was overwhelming. I had to get it.

I love love love this eyelet dress. 
Hard and soft mixed together creating the perfect juxtaposition in an outfit. I truly am a girly girl so I had to have my bow flats & white dress (did you spot the bow buttons?). Otherwise, this outfit wouldn't really reflect my style (:

Recipe: Ispahan Cupcakes, Pierre Herme



I remember back in 2009, I was wandering around the streets of Paris (around Galeries Lafayette) with a box of macarons in one hand and a post-it note in the other. It was drizzling and I was really trying my best to get to my destination as fast as my legs could carry me. I had no idea where I was heading to, just a teeny post-it with a close to legible map by the friendly salesman from Galeries Lafayette.

Long story short, I finally found the store after wandering around trying to make sense of the map. The entire time I was walking and searching, the Pierre Hermé Ispahan macaron was my fuel. It didn't matter that it was raining, I could no longer wait. I took out the box, picked one. I selected a few flavours but of course, naturally, I gravitated towards the cute little pink one. Stashed the rest in my bag and I wandered around, taking small bites of my macaron.

Maybe I was starving or maybe I was just exhausted from all the walking but until today, I can still remember the taste as if it just happened yesterday. Cliche, I know.

It was strange.....but lovely. The perfect combination of rose, lychee & raspberries. Gosh, talking about this makes me really miss Paris. 

I should probably stop writing now and just hand over the recipe to you. Hehe.

This recipe is pretty simple. The only thing is I topped it with rose buds I bought from the spice market in Istanbul. You can top it with raspberries if you like (:





Recipe adapted with some changes made from : Tartelette

For the cupcakes: 
(Makes 18-24 cupcakes)

1 1/2 cups self-rising flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup ground almonds
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs, at room temperature
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup rose water
2 tsp rose essence
24 whole lychees (you can either chop them or put them whole)
Wilton Rosa Gel Coloring


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 
In a small bowl, combine the flours and set aside.
In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth. 
Add the sugar gradually and beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. 
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. 
Add the coloring to the milk+rose water
Add the dry ingredients in three parts, alternating with the milk+rose water. 
Do not overbeat. 

Carefully spoon half the batter into the liners, place one lychee in the center and top with the remaining batter or you can chop them into bite sized bits and fold it in the batter. Leave a two inch space to the top as the cupcake will rise. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted in the center of the cupcake comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.



For the light raspberry mascarpone frosting:

125 g raspberries (fresh or frozen)
4 tbsp. icing sugar
250 g mascarpone
2-3 tsp. rose water


For the topping puree the raspberries together with the icing sugar. 
Put through a sieve to remove the seeds. 
Add the mascarpone and rose water to the raspberries and mix together with a handheld blender until smooth. Put in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 
Put the frosting into a pastry bag and pipe it on top of the cupcakes. 
Decorate each cupcake with a rose petal.

OOTD; the green lantern says thank you!


Salam alaikum girls!

If you've seen my posts on instagram and Facebook, you would know that my mother is planning to visit an orphanage in Bandung, Indonesia on the 24th! She was so excited about the goodie bags she planned to prepare for the kids so I thought, hey, why not use sghijabgirl to publicise about this and we can find sponsors so that the kids will get more stuff in their goodie bags?

Initially, I didn't set my hopes up high so we agreed, okay let's just ask for Kitkats. So I wrote a post asking if anybody wanted to sponsor Kitkats. Simple request right? There were no responses at first and I've got to admit I was a teeny weeny bit disheartened.

Then, with God's will and because I truly believe that its these orphans' rizq I've now raised more than 1k guys! I am truly truly truly happy and am so grateful to all the people who have stepped up and offered to chip in (: 

I think it meant so much to me especially because for the first time, I've managed to use sghijabgirl as a medium to allow others to gain rewards from Allah swt and that, this is no longer just a fashion blog. I believe greater things can be accomplished and I really do hope I won't just stop here.

This definitely goes in my highlights-of-2013-jar (I keep one because my friend suggested that I should write down happy happy things, put it in a jar and open it at the end of 2013 hehe) so yes, in you go!

I am madly in love with this button collar!!! I'm sure one can easily DIY this but I am hopeless at sewing so this one was perfection. I've received requests on how I wore my hijab with this collar so I will probably do a tutorial! I've been wearing this style for quite some time now because its so so so easy!  

and this is, hands down, my favourite blouse ever. All time favourite! I am crazy over eiffel towers so the moment I saw this blouse, I was like, I'VE GOT TO HAVE IT :D

ootd; geek? dork?

Salam girls!

I hope you're having a great time this chinese new year week! Its that time of the year when all the shops are closed and you get to spend quality time with your family. My extended family and I usually go to the beach and have our annual cny potluck picnic but because its been so rainy these days, we just settled for a gathering at my aunt's house (:

What have I been up to?

I submitted my fyp research paper wheehee! (PHEW!)
I just started on the 60 day insanity workout programme! (such a killer!)
Done with spring cleaning my room!

I still have lots of assignments to do but I'm taking a breather from all the schoolwork and just, relaxing and doing things I enjoy doing hehe.

Recipe: Sticky Pecan Cinnamon Rolls

Salam alaikum!

Couple of days ago, I posted on instagram that I made some sticky pecan cinnamon rolls filled with apples for the first time ever! I also decided to film the entire process, for fun :)

Here it is. Let me know if you want me to do more of this okay!

This recipe makes approximately 12-16 rolls depending on how big/small you want them to be.

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

1 pack of dry yeast (got it from NTUC Fairprice)
1 teaspoon of granulated sugar
1/4 cup of warm water (not too hot, not too cold, to activate the yeast)

In a small bowl, combine the sugar, warm water and sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Dough

1 egg
3/4 cup of whole milk
1 teaspoon of salt
1/4 cup of granulated sugar
1/4 cup of unsalted butter, melted

In your mixing bowl, mix the egg, milk, salt, sugar and melted butter. I skipped the salt because I used salted butter.

4 cups of plain flour
yeast mixture

Add 2 cups of flour and the yeast mixture. Mix until it is well incorporated and gradually add the remaining flour. Mix it for about 5 minutes until you have a smooth dough.

Oil a large bowl with some vegetable oil. Take out the dough from your mixing bowl, pull it together with your hands to form a ball. Place it in the oiled bowl and oil the top of the dough with some vegetable oil as well. Cover and place it in a warm spot for about 60-90 minutes for it to rise.

Sticky Caramel Sauce

1/2 cup of unsalted butter
1 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of heavy cream
1 cup of chopped pecans

In a pot, add the butter, heavy cream, brown sugar and let it cook and melt. Keep an eye on it. Once the sugar is dissolved, turn the heat off and let it sit and cool. Once cool, pour it in your baking pan and sprinkle the chopped pecans.

Cinnamon Roll Filling

1/3 cup of unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of granulated sugar
1 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon
1 apple, chopped into cubes.


Once the dough has doubled in size, roll it onto a floured surface into a rectangle. Brush the melted butter over the top and sprinkle the chopped apples & sugar cinammon mixture.Tightly roll the dough and cut it into 12-16 slices. Try to cut them evenly and place them in the baking pan. Cover with a towel for about 10-20 minutes.

Bake it for 20 minutes at 170 degrees celcius.
Allow them to cool slightly before carefully inverting them onto a larger plate.
