2012: we came, we raved, we loved.

Salam alaikum!

Final entry of 2012, nope not an OOTD one hehe (:

I remember having a conversation with my mum right before I turned 21 last year. "What do you want to do?" she asked and I said, I really wanted to open up a blogshop. I've seen so many girls of other races setting up their own at such a young age and I was continuously blown away by their entrepreneurial spirit. I was so determined, at 21, to try everything I've ever wanted to do. I didn't want to have any regrets. No looking back, just hustle like crazy because I truly believe that pressure will grant me diamonds.

I'm going to be honest with you here. Running a blogshop is far from easy. It takes patience, a huge chunk of your time, trips to the post office nearly everyday (but its ok you get to make friends with the staff haha!) and a huge amount of time staring at the screen, replying to a variety of questions. Trust me, not every customer is a friendly one so you've got to grit your teeth and smile through your replies sometimes.

Then comes the labels and logos copyright issues. I remember battling this with another blogshop and while I might have been upset, I do believe in being honest and true. Remember that originality will bring you far and that is something, no one can ever take from you. So, please please please remember to label all the photos and logos you worked so hard for.

With all that said, it IS worth it. Forget about the income, the experience alone is worth the sweat and tears. I didn't even know how to run one, didn't know anyone who had a blogshop at that time but I began to learn on the job and I had to learn fast. I made friends with other successful blogshop owners like Hanis from Meem Clothings and we have conversations sharing our experiences and how we handle certain problems. I am thankful for she was always so helpful and was always willing to share solutions with me. Its always a roll and I had to keep on going to make sure that I was constantly afloat.

In addition, its crazy important to have a good support structure and these are the people who have really proved to love me regardless of who I am when I get so upset and stressed out. These are the people whose opinion matter the most to me when I need help in making decisions, big or small. Others can say what they want but when you know you've got the most bulletproof support system, you're unstoppable. I'm infinitely grateful for them, you know who you are.

No words can possibly describe my love for shopsghijabgirl. Some of my customers have become my friends and I love seeing them don on tops, skirts and hijabs they bought from me. It might not be my own label but I am proud and happy nonetheless. Come mid next year, I may have to bid goodbye to shopsghijabgirl. I'll be having a full time job and it would really be a miracle if I could still run this show while juggling another bigger musical.

Most importantly, trust and leave it to Allah. Our rezki comes from Him therefore always remember to give back and donate to others. Also, do forgive me for my shortcomings, at times, I'm slow at replying emails/orders and orders get mixed up, do forgive me.

Any budding entrepreneurs (new blogshop owners) who need more publicity (its mighty important to establish a customer base and the climb can take quite awhile), email me at for more information okay? I'll let you know how I can help you! (:

This entry doesn't just apply to the girls who want to set up blogshops of course, any mountain you feel like concurring, just do it guys. Don't think too much. Don't be like me and procrastinate till I turned 21 to have the courage to do something I've always loved and wanted to do. You want to start a fashion blog? Do it. You want to learn how to ride a bicycle at 20? Do it. It can be so simple to another person but if its a small hurdle that's stopping you from achieving bigger, epic, things then come what may, overcome it.

So follow your heart, find what you love and even if things don't work out, don't sweat cos our priorities are always shifting. You'll find a new thing you love and you'll make it matter cos nobody makes a decision and sticks with it for the rest of their lives anyways.

Shopsghijabgirl/Sghijabgirl readers, you've made my 2012 a really crazy but awesome rollercoaster ride and I sincerely thank you guys from the depths of my bottomless heart, for all the support, for the emails, for the suggestions, I take it all with open arms.

Till we meet again next year.

Much love friends,
Nadya Abd

Penny University!

Salam alaikum!

I love cafes! I really do. I love the ambience, staring and wishing I have those eclectic furnitures in my house (depending on the different cafes of course), some go for modern sharp and clean while some choose chic shabby with a mismatch of tables and chairs. Then comes my love for anything sweet! No use denying it anymore, I strongly believe that life is meant to be peppered with sweet moments, literally. Forget your diet! Enjoy delicious mouthwatering desserts while you can! Haha such a bad giver of advice! :B

Cafes usually have an abundance of dessert choices from pies, cakes and oh those beautiful little sinful pleasures, cupcakes. Followed by the ultimate reason why cafes exist, of course for the array of tea and coffee choices on the menu.

I've been wanting to go to Penny Uni for quite a while now so when initially, Dalillah, Zahirah and I had a baking day planned, we thought, okay why not just skip the hard part and go straight to devouring those little munchkins, in a nice setting without all the turmoil and hard work of standing in front of the mixer, making a mess out of your clean kitchen and the excruciating moment of waiting, hoping that your baked goodies will turn out just like how you expected them to be.

Forget it.

Let's just go to a cafe.

The thing about Penny Uni that attracts girls like bees to a pot of honey, is their tie up with Fluff Bakery. My gosh, have you guys seen her posts on Instagram? Every few minutes, someone will go, "will it still be there? If I come at 3pm will it still be there?!"

Believe me, I've never been so stressed in my life over desserts.

I was asking the both of them the entire time we were on our way there "do you think they'll still have the eggnog salted caramel cupcakes?" "what if there's nothing?!"

We cabbed by the way. The place is quite accessible.....but at the same time inaccessible. No, don't worry guys, tonnes of buses go there.

You have no idea how happy we felt! It was raining and aside from the pretty girls handling the orders, greeting us (they're super friendly btw! we had a lovely chat with one of them and even made her take our photos hehe sorry!), I remember dashing to the counter to see what was still there (kept my cool of course, no one likes a desperate girl :p)

The three of us ordered a pot of tea each, a slice of the grasshopper mint pie, smores pie & a lovely eggnog salted caramel cupcake each.

If you ever went what's the big deal, it's just desserts.

You're wrong, my friend.

It was crazy awesome. I'm not really gonna go describe how mad awesome it is but the baker (whoever you are, you magical anonymous baker) sure knows her stuff *\o/*

We stayed there for quite some time, just talking and talking non stop.

We also had a nice chat with the owner of the cafe and he told us there's gonna be moreeeee mouthwatering stuff he plans to do for the cafe! More unique and interesting items (certainly not the kind that you can get anywhere in Singapore) on the menu!

and its awesome halal stuff guys! I know its not that hard to find halal food in Singapore but to get nice halal cafes like this? Rare, I must say.

Btw, Zahirah's the sweetest! She went to Indonesia and bought Dalillah and I, tie dye shawls from Dian Pelangi! MAD LOVE!!! <3 Thank you Zahirah!!!! (:

Just a few snapshots of the cafe's unique choice of lights and furniture.

Spot the owner of Penny Uni in this shot!
May your business continue to prosper and hopefully, to more Penny Uni-s in the North and West areas :)

Thank you for opening such a lovely halal cafe in Singapore!
We truly enjoyed ourselves.

The only thing we didn't really enjoy?
No 3G connection whatsoever (or maybe just at the booth we were at). We were waving our phones in the air to get data! HAHA!

Okay okay, we know what you're trying to tell us.
Ditch the smartphones, stop checking Instagram or Twitter and spend some sacred quality time catching up with friends while sipping coffee/tea & eating desserts right?

Yes, we hear ya! (:

Recipe: Waldorf Salad

Salam alaikum!

A few days ago, I posted a picture of my favourite salad ever on instagram! I promised I'd post the recipe so here it is! (:

I'm not really a veggie lover, I know I know what you're thinking! My mother nags at me all the time, "veggies are good for your skin!" I know you love me mum (yes, I know you're reading this heh) but argh I really cannot stand the taste of certain veggies, especially broccoli *shudders*

Hence why the Waldorf salad is my favourite! (:
Cos the ratio of ingredients: fruits>veggie

If you've never tried it before, try making it! Its so simple! Especially for you to munch on at work/school instead of all those unhealthy snacks!

Anws, here's a short history on the popular Waldorf salad hehe.

Waldorf salad : Created at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1896 not by a chef but by the maître d'hôtel, (dining room manager) Oscar Tschirky, the Waldorf salad was an instant success.
The original version of this salad contained only apples, celery and mayonnaise. Chopped walnuts later became an integral part of the dish. Waldorf salad is usually served on top of a bed of lettuce.

All you need is:

3 tablespoon of mayonnaise
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/4 teaspoon of cracked black pepper
1/2 cup of red seedless grapes
1 sweet red apple
1/3 cup celery
lettuce (the quantity is up to you)
1/2 cup of walnuts

Mix your mayonnaise & lemon juice.

Add your cracked black pepper & salt

Chop your walnuts, slice your celery and grapes in half.

Mix all the ingredients together!

 Tada! Healthy snack!

Have fun trying it out! I hope you'll love it as much as I do!
Its the perfect salad, with the right amount of crunch from the apples, celery & walnuts! Yum!

Much love friends,
