Outfit of the Day #20: got mustard?

Salam alaikum!

Went to town the other day to catch Ides of March (Ryan Gosling @.@ heheh) with my bestfriends! Its been out in the theatres for some time but its just so difficult to get a free day for all of us, due to commitments and such. Sigh, feel super adult these days. Busy busy bee! Anyways, realised I've been complaining a lot about the rain these days (which is not a good thing obviously, afterall rain is a blessing from Allah swt) To avoid complaining, I shall look on the brightside! Cold weather means more blazers, sweaters and layering, which is not a bad thing at all for me because I really really love blazers. Definitely my most favourite clothing item! :)

Wore my mustard infinityxbeyond blazer (the last time I checked they still have it in stock), with my favourite h&m tanktop and loafers from tod's.

Watch this space tomorrow cos I'll be launching the super cute polka dot shawls! Limited pieces available, and I really really mean limited. See ya!

Much love, Nadia

Hijab: A Muslim Male Perspective

Salam alaikum,

I'd like to share an article on IGotItCovered by Brother T.Husayn. He wrote on Hijab: A Muslim Male Perspective. I've added several snippets from the article and I love that he supports all his opinion/viewpoint with dalils from the Quraan and Hadith. It certainly made me reflect as a person who wears the Hijab on a daily basis and reminded me why I put it on every single day (:

The first two categories of women should be advised (gently, kindly) and shown extensive evidences from the Qur’an & Prophetic traditions (Sunnah) that unequivocally prove the obligation of wearing hijab. Allah jalla wa ‘alaa states in His Book:

{O Prophet! Tell your wives and daughters and the believing women that they should draw over themselves their jilbab (outer garments) (when in public); this will be more conducive to their being recognized (as decent women) and not harassed. But God is indeed oft-forgiving, most merciful} (33:59)

{And know that women advanced in years, who no longer feel any sexual desire incur no sin if they discard their thiyab (outer garments), provided they do not aim at a showy display of their zeenah (charms or beauty). But it is better for them to abstain (from this); and God is all-hearing, all-knowing} (24:60)

As for those women who use the ‘there is no compulsion in religion’ rule, they misunderstand the context which is intended to address forced conversions into the religion of Islam. In the Sunnah we find our Rasool (salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) instructing us to rebuke our children who do not pray Salaah after a certain age. Is that compulsion? No. When the people refused to give Zakaah at the time of Abu Bakr and he fought them, was that compulsion? No. These were examples of ‘compulsion’ only linguistically and semantically but not Islamically.

As for the rest of the categories of women, and for all Muslims for that matter, hijab ultimately is about submission to the will of Allah and his commandments.

{And obey Allah and His Messenger that you may obtain Mercy} (3:132)

{It is not fitting for the believing man or for the believing woman, that when Allah and His Messenger have decreed any matter, that they should have any option in their decision…} (33:36)

A woman without hijab is like one who stands in a storm under hail and lightning – little is her protection, and harm may befall her at any moment. A woman with hijab is like one who takes shelter inside a fortified home next to a fireplace on a cold dreary night – protected, graceful, content, empowered, and emancipated.  I hope a Muslim man’s viewpoint on hijab serves to color this grand concept in a positive light and motivates many more sisters to explore the beauty of mind and body inherent in embracing complete hijab.

Outfit of the Day #19: velvet

Salam alaikum,

Oh how I miss HFW. Today's a simple entry on an outfit I wore recently. I've not been wearing dresses/skirts lately due to the rainy season in Singapore right now, don't like the thought of my skirt sweeping the wet pavements you know? The day started out quite well actually, sun shining so bright and all, then tada, it rained!

Anyways, I went to this small ship docked at Harbourfront as there was a Book Fair inside! Not many popular titles but stuff like dictionaries were all quite cheap (:

My red "skirt" was actually a dress from Poplook! Gosh, I love Poplook! If you want me to hold a spree for them, do let me know. If there's a lot of you, you can share the shipping fee which is about 20rm if I'm not wrong (:

DIY: Wallflowers

Salam alaikum!

So....I was bored the other day and then I found this super lovely DIY and I thought hey, I have some extra Ikea napkins lying around so why not try it right? (: Its really really simple to do though it requires a bit of patience I guess because to be honest, I am really lousy at doing diy stuff (I always require the help of my bestfriends!) Somehow, somewhere, something will just go wrong for me but not this time, I think this was quite a successful diy on my part heheh.

Okay enough talking, this is what I'm talking about! WALLFLOWERS!

Isn't it super super cute?! The best part is you get to customise it, yknow, choose your favourite colors for your room, or anything to suit your bedroom walls.

Salam alaikum!

Was scrolling down tumblr the other day and I kept seeing this quote everywhere. I think it is certainly a powerful reminder for us as we are often caught up in our worldly desires. Didn't know who to credit so if you know where this quote originally came from, do let me know :)

Hijab Tutorials Part I

Salam alaikum!

Here are some hijab video tutorials I certainly find useful if you've just started wearing shawls. The thing about these videos is that you can always try the looks but at the same time, make a few adjustments to suit your own style. If its too short on the front part, try out different ways to make it longer etc. So, don't immediately close the window if you think the style doesn't suit you, instead, find ways to make it your own :) I think girls who do hijab tutorials on youtube are really creative! Seriously, I'd go who would have thought to do this and that to get this look? Certainly not me! Props to them, really.

Will update in part II if I find more :)

To those who have been requesting for hijab tutorials, hope this helps!

Outfit of the Day #18

Salam!

Just a quick update! When to town today to get the remaining stuff I intend to put in the giveaway bag and went window shopping with my bestfriend :) Btw, something in this outfit is in the giveaway bag too! ;)

If you love scrapbooking, Urbanwrite's having a 30% off for all their scrapbook papers (with a minimum purchase of 10 pieces) and Sephora's having their Christmas sale going on, so there's lots of make up palettes (including Urban Decay's) going for cheaper than usual. New Look's also having their instant dip win, giving out vouchers of $10 off footwear and stuff.

So um, if you do not intend on making some serious damage to your pocket, stay far far away from Orchard Rd okie?

Chanel and Mac lipstick review

Salam alaikum!

HFW's over and I'm really gonna miss cracking my brains to plan an outfit to suit the respective themes! Hahaha! I have to be honest and say that I really enjoyed myself. I planned out outfits I've never worn out before and yay, I get to recreate the looks when school reopens. Plus, the fact that the other girls who took part in HFW, wow, they really inspired me with their outfits. If you have a lot of free time, do click on each and every post. All the girls are really super fashionable and their different styles are truly amazing :)

Recently, I've received a number of emails and questions on formspring asking about my make up routine and the lipsticks I use. To be honest, I have to tell you that I am no expert in cosmetic products, at all. Really, at all. Only recently did I started buying brushes for my everyday make up application, all this while, I've been using whatever brushes/sponges that comes with the product I use.

Okay get straight to the point!

These are my favourite lipsticks that I often use.

1) Chanel Rouge Coco Vendomé

Its a lovely dark pink color, highly pigmented and glides on very very smoothly. I usually stay away from pink lipsticks because it'll look too girlish on me but I'd give this an exception cos it sort of gives me a more mature look, probably because of the brownish undertones. The swatch I did below doesn't really give it justice but go to the Chanel counter and ask them to try it on you. I think its really important that you try on lipsticks (especially pricey ones) first before you buy them. A certain lip color may look super lovely on a certain skin tone but not necessarily all types of skin tone.

2) MAC Russian Red

This is THE red lipstick, I promise you. I've always shied away from red lipsticks because its difficult to maintain and if you don't wear it well, you'll end up looking like a clown!  But really, this is the one. Its matte so it glides on smoothly and does not create a mess at all. Once, I thought I made the mistake of wearing it to a dentist appointment. The whole time when the dentist's gloves touched my lips and my chin, I was thinking, oh nooooo, by the end of this session I'll probably look like a clown with red lipstick marks all over. I whipped out my compact mirror at the end of it and got the shock of my life (exaggerating right? haha!), nothing happened! The shade just got a teeny bit lighter, that's all! Can you believe it? All that paranoia for nothing T_T Even the sales girl at the airport told me that Emirates flight attendants swear by this red lippy hehe.

3) MAC House Wine

In my opinion, I think this color is exactly like Chanel's except that Chanel has a glossier finish but this is not matte, maybe halfway between matte and shiny glossy. Yes, you can see that I'm not really good at describing these lippies haha! Its like halfway between pink and red and because of the Lustre formula, you can choose to apply it heavily for a dramatic intense look or just lightly as a lip stain. Definitely perfect for everyday look! ;)

Okay, hope that answers your questions. Again, I am no make-up expert and whatever I've written is just from my humble opinion.

OOTD #17/ HFW Day 7/ Yureka Teppanyaki Review

Salam alaikum!

Wow, we've finally reached Day 7 and I super love the theme, With Girlfriends. Coincidentally, I just went out with my best girlfriends in the whole wide world the other day so for this, no individual shots but to suit the theme, a picture of us together! :)

Everytime we're out to celebrate birthdays, the birthday girl will get to pick a theme for our clothes. It used to be colors but we've now diversified hehe. So for this, she picked Heels and Denim. One of us couldn't stand being in heels the whole day, she actually brought her pretty oxfords with her, can you believe it? Haha!

I wore a simple get go outfit, plain white tank top, polka dotted blazer from h&m (gosh, you've gotta love h&m and their huge variety of blazers!) and light denim jeans. My accessories were this cute owl necklace and some silver bangles. Really simple, chill out kind of outfit.

So we celebrated her birthday at Yureka Teppanyaki, one of Singapore's very few halal Japanese restaurant. We were excited cos it was our first time there and I've heard about it from so many people. We reached there at about late afternoon and cos it was a weekday, there was nobody in sight. Only towards the evening, people came streaming in.

It was certainly interesting seeing the chef cook our dishes right infront of us. Maybe it would have been fun if he interacted with us because it was kind of awkward. The four of us were just staring at him cooking the whole time!

We ordered two Teppanyaki sets so were allowed to choose the variety of dishes that we wanted. From prawns, scallops, chicken, beef, cuttlefish and salmon. We were also served Ebi Furai (breaded prawn) and Sweet and Sour fish fillet. The sets came with rice, miso soup, hot green tea and a soft drink of your choice.

Altogether, it costs us 80+ sgd. To be honest, it is quite pricey to me because the serving is quite small but for the experience, I think its quite worth it. However, the place is not that accessible because you have to take a bus either from Ang Mo Kio or Yishun if I'm not wrong.

The staff was very kind right from the start, helping us with the orders and suggesting what would be the best choice for the 4 of us. They even played a Happy Birthday song for my bestfriend and helped us with serving of the cake we brought :) Even the executive chef came out to talk to us and ask how did we find the food and he was also telling us about how he wished he could bring this restaurant to the east side of Singapore too since this is quite a distance away from East and West siders.

Overall, I think it was a really nice experience and my bestfriends and I really enjoyed ourselves there. If you're going at night or on weekends, I suggest you make a reservation because there's only two tables where the chef cooks live in front of you. So, to get the best "seats", give them a call before you head over there ;) Would definitely recommend this restaurant!
